covid-19 escape button

There are a lot of mixed messages about what we ‘should’ be doing while we are going through covid-19 and at home isolating.

Messages such as:
a) you’re not been your best self so use this as an opportunity to be a better person OR
b) calm down, take it easy, don’t be so hard on yourself OR
c) if you don’t use this as an opportunity to do something great, you’re missing out.

It can be so confusing and as a result many of us just end up giving ourselves a leave pass – the covid-19 escape button.

The escape button into overeating, over drinking, not trying so hard, skipping exercise, not building our business, not writing that book, etc. The escape button that tells us ‘it’s unusual times right now so I don’t need to use any discipline.’

And why wouldn’t we look for a leave pass. What’s going on at the moment is a massive strain on our brain – all the uncertainty, the unknown and the fear. Our brain is operating on overdrive which means things that are ‘hard’ can feel harder.

And yes, things are hard, but we always have a choice, despite what’s going on around us.

We can choose to do the ‘hard’ things (the things that take discipline) or we can choose to do the easy, more enjoyable thing right now. It’s completely a choice, coronavirus or not.

So, rather than saying ‘I should use this time to be my best self or I should be doing this, or I should be doing that’ and then either forcing your way through it or beating yourself up for not doing it, ask instead ‘What do I really want?’

Really honestly and genuinely, what do I want? And why do I want that? And, then tap into what you really want, and why you want that, rather than what you feel you ‘should’ do.

Because, anything you feel like you ‘should’ do, usually brings resistance. Which means it will require will power and that rarely works.

Once you know what you really want, you don’t need an escape button or an excuse not to do the ‘hard’ things, because you are doing the things you ‘want’ rather than the things you think you ‘should’ do.

For example, part of you desires to read, watch tv, not worry about your weight. Then there is another part of you that desires to weigh less or start a business. Tap into why you want to weigh less or why you want to start a business. Why is it you want those things?

Because you can always eat what you want. You can always skip exercise or binge on TV.

Covid-19 doesn’t need to be an excuse to do these things.

There is no should or shouldn’t you can do either one.

That’s why it’s important to figure out what it is you really want. And stop judging yourself for any of your decisions. Decide what you want to do and don’t punish yourself either way. Because, when you judge yourself; it just increases your desire for the other thing.

Don’t force yourself with ‘should’ but encourage yourself with kindness. Be aware of actions that will lead you towards what you want.  Because when you focus on what you want and take actions to get there you don’t need an excuse such as the covid-19 escape button.

So, take some time, figure out what it is you really want, not what you should do and take actions aligned with that.
